Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin posed a simple question after reporting on the thousands of criminal illegal aliens being protected by a blue state’s government.

While President Donald Trump’s administration has been working toward restoring national sovereignty along with law and order, elected Democrats — and some RINOs — have taken steps toward shielding illegal aliens from justice. Now it turns out that more than 250 alleged murderers accounted for just some of the nearly 15,000 aliens DHS has issued detainers for, only to be ignored by the Empire State.

During a press conference Friday, Mullin detailed how 14,766 detainers had been issued to New York law enforcement between January 2025 and September 2026, totaling almost 48,000 felony charges throughout the state, including 258 murder charges.

“Silence. Absolute silence is what we’ve got from New York off of those retainers,” said the secretary. “So you have to ask yourself, why would they release these individuals back onto the streets? They’re illegals. They have no right to be back into the United States. They’ve committed a crime. We know that they’re the worst of the worst.”

Earlier this year, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), currently seeking reelection, signed laws aimed at barring state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement while demonizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“From day one, I have been clear: Flagrant abuses of power by ICE will not stand in New York,” said Hochul regarding the May signing. “That is why we have enacted a comprehensive set of policies to hold ICE accountable, protect the constitutional rights and safety of every New Yorker, and ensure there’s no sanctuary for criminals in our state.”

“States like New York can and must be a guardrail and national leader against ICE overreach, and I’m proud to enact these strong, common-sense protections for New Yorkers,” added the governor.

Following the ban on 287(g) agreements, allowing “for state and local law enforcement personnel and facilities to be used for civil immigration enforcement purposes,” a coalition of sheriffs filed suit against Hochul in August, PIX11 reported.

Mullin further stated during his press conference, sanctuary politicians enabled “criminal activity to thrive, not for the American citizens to be safe.” He also called out New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), who remained silent after an off-duty cop was stabbed, allegedly by an illegal alien, at the same time they chose to condemn federal immigration enforcement after an ICE-involved shooting followed a criminal allegedly using his vehicle to ram agents while his five-year-old son was in the back seat.

“While sanctuary politicians like Mayor Mamdani insist on releasing criminal illegal aliens back onto the streets, ICE is out arresting them to keep New York communities safe,” asserted a post from ICE on X Friday evening. The thread included a list of convicted “kidnappers, pedophiles, rapists, and other violent criminals.”
