Seven Days to Go- Clinton Loses Lead

Today is November 1, just seven days from the election.  The race to the White House is clearly tightening with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s lead in many polls dropping precipitously to about a two point advantage over Republican nominee Donald Trump. In fact the recent ABC/Washington post which includes a high percentage of Democrats in its sample data shows Trump at 46% leading Clinton at 45% by one point. Trump  leads Clinton by four points in the highly respected LA Times/USC poll (Trump 47%, Clinton 43%). Trump also now leads by four points in the critical battlefield state of  Florida.

Suffice it to say, Hillary Clinton has not started the week off well. Her path to victory which appeared almost assured less than ten days ago is now seriously in doubt. She is now in the race for her life, as she faces the most unexpected come from behind challenge from an opponent who is the antithesis of a Washington outsider, who has waged a presidential campaign which has been unlike that of any other in recent history. Secondly, Clinton on Friday October 28, became the recipient of the October surprise to beat all October surprises. FBI Director James Comey announced that the FBI has re-opened its investigation into Clinton’s use of an unsecure email server upon the discovery of emails which may be pertinent to the investigation from an unrelated case. The unrelated case turned out to be none other than one involving former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner’s “sexting” scandal with a minor. Weiner is the estranged husband of Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin. The “pertinent” emails were among the 650,000 found on a laptop jointly shared by Weiner and Abedin. Abedin was reportedly forwarding emails from her State.gov account to her Yahoo account and then printing them because it is easier to print from Yahoo than the State.Gov account.  It is highly possible that these 650,000 emails included classified information and that Clinton’s deleted 33,000 emails could be among them. Furthermore, Abedin who previously stated that she had turned over all classified documents could face criminal charges if classified information is found on this home device. Weiner, who could face fifteen to thirty years in prison if found guilty of either engaging in sexual activities or sharing pornography with a minor, cooperated by turning over the laptop to the FBI.   We have also learned of yet another Clinton-related conflict of interest, the prosecutor leading the Department of Justice’s investigation into the 650,000 emails on Anthony Weiner’s laptop Assistant, Attorney General Peter Kadzkik, is a good friend of Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta. In fact, they dined together the night of Clinton’s Benghazi testimony.  Clinton and other Democrats have pivoted to calling for Comey to release the emails knowing full well that he cannot do that.  Clinton who is in full survival mode has already effectively removed Abedin from the campaign trail and has started casually referring to her aide of over twenty years, her “second daughter” as a “staffer”.

November 1 also marks the start of open enrollment in Obamacare, yet another unpleasant story for Hillary Clinton as Obamacare premiums are expected to increase an average of 22% in 2017.  However, when you peel back the data and look at the premium increases on a state by state level, the percentage increases are much higher. For example, in Arizona, premiums are increasing by as much as 116%.  Many insurers are also fleeing the exchanges. The number of carriers will drop from 298 to 228 last year creating a situation where 21% of participants will have only one carrier to choose from, although it is possible the carrier may offer more than one plan. (http://money.cnn.com/2016/10/24/news/economy/obamacare-premiums/)

The Obamacare outlook is particularly dismal in the battleground state of Pennsylvania where premiums are increasing 53% and the number of state carriers has dropped from thirteen to eight. The situation is particularly dire in the Philadelphia with its close to 90% Democratic voting base where the number of insurers carrying Obamacare has dropped to two.  Donald Trump who has been aggressively campaigning in Pennsylvania elected to deliver in the Philadelphia suburb of King of Prussia, his signature speech about healthcare on November 1, the Obamacare open enrollment kickoff day, reinforcing to voters just what a “disaster’ Obamacare has been for their wallets. And of course, whenever we think of the problems with Obamacare, we are reminded that the precursor to Obamacare was the ill-conceived and poorly executed Hillary Care. Said another way, a vote for Hillary is a vote against affordable health care and patient choice. While Clinton still has the advantage in Pennsylvania, her margin has shriveled to two points. Trump could still win the Keystone state.

With just seven days to go until election day, Trump is giving Clinton a run for her money.
