Any doubts about podcasting’s graduation from niche to mainstream were unequivocally erased by this year’s Infinite Dial study. One third of the country’s 12+ population has listened to a podcast, some 89 million people. Of them, 46 million are monthly listeners, up from 39 million one year earlier.
But the story isn’t so much how many Americans are tuning to podcasts but who they are. Podcast consumers are more likely to have a college degree and to be affluent. Half of respondents with household incomes greater than $100,000 have listened to a podcast and a quarter has done so in the past month.
